📝 How to Become a Volunteer

To ensure a safe and impactful experience, all volunteers must:

✅ Be 18 years of age or older

✅ Complete an application

✅ Participate in a brief interview

✅ Attend a Volunteer Orientation

Volunteer  Positions

Critical Needs

Concierge – Greet guests, gather essential details, check eligibility for services, and answer phones. Shift: 8:45 am to 12:00 pm

Receptionist– Answer phones and take messages.
Shift: 8:45 am to 1:00 pm

Host – Monitor the eating area and visit with guests. Assist guests in getting to their predetermined service on time.
Shift: 8:45 am to 1:00 pm

Intake/HMIS (Homeless Management Information System) – Determine guest’s eligibility for assistance. Input guest’s information into the HMIS system. (Requires extra training and HMIS certification).
Shift: 8:45 am to 1:00 pm or later

Social Services Assistant – Assists Hope Center guests in obtaining services provided by the Social Security Administration. This may include establishing an online account at SSA.gov, setting an appointment to obtain a replacement Social Security card, applying for Social Security retirement benefits, applying for Medicare, applying for disability benefits, and, if necessary, arranging for transportation to the Social Security office.
Shift: 
Flexible hours, part-time volunteer work.

Food Service – Breakfast & lunch preparation and service. Kitchen organization and cleaning. (Requires a food server license available on the internet.)
Shift: 7:00 am to 1:00 pm

Dental Hygienist – Assist the volunteer dentist. Requires current Dental Hygiene license.
Shift: 2 Fridays/month 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Dental Clinic Coordinator – Work with our volunteer dentist to schedule and keep records on guests. A background in being a dental assistant or dental hygienist would be helpful, but not required. Any medical training would be beneficial.
Shift: 2 Fridays/month 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Laundry – Wash and dry guests’ clothing. We have three washers and dryers and can do laundry for up to six guests per day.
Shift: 8:45am to 12:00pm

Showers – Monitor, clean, and sanitize shower areas. Our guests can have showers twice per week if staffing permits.
Shift: 8:45am to 12:00pm

Clothing Closet – Choose outfits for guests, restock and maintain organization of Clothing Closet with new donations.
Shift: 8:45am to 12:00pm

Donations – Process donations for restocking the upstairs inventory for the Clothing Closet.
Shift: 8:45am to 12:00pm

Volunteer Orientation is held on the first and third Wednesday of the month 10 – 11:30. Applications are available on this website or can be filled out at orientation.

Currently Hope Center Houston is open M-F from 9:00am to 1:00pm. We are looking at adding weekend days and extending weekday hours. If this occurs, we may expand to 2 shifts daily for the essential services.
